To provide a steel for machine structural use that reduces agglutination during intermittent cutting and a cutting method thereof.SOLUTION: A steel for machine structural use comprises, in mass%, C: 0.40-0.80%, Si: 0.01-less than 0.15%, Mn: 1.00-2.00%, Cr: 0.050-1.600%, P: 0.001-0.030%, S: 0.002-0.030%, N: 0.0030-0.0150%, Al: 0.001-less than 0.024%, O: 0.0030% or less with the balance being Fe and impurities, and satisfies 48.5<51[Mn%]-190[Si%]-32[Cr%]-230[Al%]<98.3, and has a hardness of 160-290 HV.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
