Abstract:
Process for the preparation of a mononitride of formula U1-xPuxN in which x is a number ranging from 0 to 1. This process consists in mixing UO2 and/or PuO2 with carbon to form a mixture containing not more than 10% by weight of carbon, heating the mixture to a temperature of 1500 to 1600 DEG C under a nitrogen stream and then under a stream of nitrogen and of hydrogen-containing rare gas containing less than 8% by volume of hydrogen to form the nitride and cooling the nitride obtained, preferably under a hydrogen-containing rare gas stream containing less than 8% by volume of hydrogen. The use of these various gas streams makes it possible to reduce to a minimum the carbon and oxygen contents of the mononitride obtained, which can be employed as nuclear fuel.
