Abstract:
PURPOSE:To produce 2-hydroxybutyric acid in high yield at a low cost by reacting 1,2-butanediol in the presence of a specific microbial strain belonging to genus Rhodococcus, its cell or its treated product. CONSTITUTION:A microbial strain belonging to genus Rhodococcus [e.g. Rhodococcus sp. HA-42 (FERM P-10462)] is cultured in a medium containing a carbon source (e.g. 1,2-butanediol), a nitrogen source (e.g. peptone), etc., under aerobic condition such as agitation under aeration or shaking. Microbial cells are collected from the cultured product by filtration, etc., and the cell, its disintegrated product or their treated product is used as an enzymatic agent. 1,2- Butanediol is subjected to an enzymatic reaction in the presence of said enzymatic agent in an aqueous solvent such as water or phosphoric acid. After the completion of the reaction, produced 2-hydroxybutyric acid is separated and purified by ether extraction, ion exchange resin treatment, etc. The objective compound can be produced from inexpensive 1,2-butanediol in high efficiency at a low cost by this process.
