Abstract:
The disclosure relates to a system for positioning a read/write transducer relative to a magnetic storage disc having a plurality of concentric tracks. The output of a ring detector (34) is used in controlling the settling of a read/write head (10) over a desired track (14) to significantly reduce the settling time. The speed is represented by the ring pulse time output from the ring detector (30) measured as the step motor (16) crosses the zero velocity axis. By bringing an additional signal out of the ring detector (30), the direction in which the read/write head has crossed the track can also be defined. Based on how fast the read/write head (10) is going and in which direction, the microprocessor (28) accesses a lookup table for selecting the timing of the damping pulse.
