Date Nov. 23, 1995A method and an arrangement for controlling an internal combustion engine is suggested wherein, in at least a first operating range, a lean air/fuel mixture are pregiven and, for a power command from the driver (for example, in transient operating states or in the vicinity of the full load range) a switchover to a stoichiometric mixture takes place; during the transition, the torque change (caused by the change of the air/fuel ratio) is essentially compensated by correspondingly influencing the air supply to the engine.
