To provide an authentication method which can be suitably used in a data dispersing/distributing network utilizing a network environment such as the Internet.
The authentication method employs a public key encryption scheme wherein an authentication function between a plurality of nodes connected to the Internet is realized with use of encipher key data and decipher key data as a set. A key distribution server 20, in response to a request from a node 10A upstream thereof, issues a pair of public key data (Kp) and a secret key data (Ks) corresponding to contents to be distributed. The server 20 provides the public key data (Kp) as the decipher key data to the node 10A upstream of the request originator and keeps the secret key data (Ks) as the encipher key data therein. The server 20 issues key data (T) for connection authentication encrypted with the secret key data (Ks) to a downstream or relay node.
