To facilitate the maintenance of an intermediate transfer body and its peripheral components in an image forming apparatus which obtains a color image on both sides of a recording medium by transferring to an intermediate image carrier a first image obtained by overlapping and transferring the toner images of different colors respectively formed on a plurality of image carriers to the intermediate transfer body, and transferring the first image to one side of the recording medium and then transferring to the other side of the same recording medium a second image obtained by transferring the toner images formed on respective image carriers to the intermediate transfer body.

A transfer unit 64 including the intermediate image carrier 15 is turned so that the intermediate transfer body 3 is pulled out from a main body housing 1.
