Abstract:
A multi-mode modem for xDSL communication is disclosed. At startup, an initialization procedure is carried out to determine the capability of the remote terminal. To this purpose, initialization signals are transmitted from a central terminal and a remote terminal, which comprise a capability list request (CLR), mode request (MR), mode select (MS), acknowledge (ACK) and non-acknowledge (NACK) signals. If the remote terminal is not able to communicate according to the invention, a fallback procedure to a legacy communication mode is carried out. Data communication is carried out according to the ITU G.992.1 and G.992.2 recommendations.
