Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a microporous film having a persistent hydrophilicity and excellent permeability to gases and liquids by forming a coating of a water-soluble polymer on the surface of a polyolefin microporous film and the surfaces of its micropores and insolubilizing the film in water. SOLUTION: This film is useful as e.g. a separator of an alkali battery and is produced by applying a solution comprising a water-soluble polymer, 1-60 wt.%, based on the water-soluble polymer, surfactant, and a solvent to a polyolefin microporous film, drying the film, and insolubilizing the water- insoluble polymer in water. The water-soluble polymer is exemplified by PVA, polyethylene glycol, polyacrylic acid, polystyrenesulfonic acid, or cellulose and is desirably polyvinylpyrrolidone. When the microporous film is used as a battery separator, it is desirable that it has a thickness of 10-100 μm, a void volume of 30-80%, and a mean pore diameter of 0.001-2 μm. The insolubilization treatment in water is desirably performed by crosslinking under the influence of heat, an alkali, or the like.
