To provide a holding material for a catalytic converter capable of satisfactorily binding inorganic fibers even if the use amount of organic binder is reduced or desirably not used at all and maintaining the same thickness as before, and the catalytic converter capable of eliminating the burnout operation for the organic binder, satisfactorily holding a catalytic carrier for a long period, and eliminating the generation of exhaust gas resulting from the organic binder.
This holding material is used for the catalytic converter having the catalytic carrier, a metallic casing storing the catalytic carrier, and a holding material wound on the catalytic carrier and interposed in a clearance between the catalytic carrier and the metallic casing. In the holding material for the catalytic converter, inorganic fibers are bound by a binder including a swelling clay mineral. The catalytic converter holds the catalytic carrier by the holding material for the catalytic converter and is stored in the metallic casing.
