A game apparatus comprising card data reading means which detects data unique to a card, input means operable by a player, a game program executing means arranged to execute a game based on the data detected by the card data reading means and in response to the data from the input means, and display means arranged to display various images on a display in accordance with the detected data as well as with the progress of the game, characterized in that the card data reading means is arranged to mount a set of cards for a single scan, said set of cards being selected by the player from a variety of cards each of which represents a game character or a function related to the game character and is printed with a code pattern indicative of the game characters or the functions related to the game characters, said card data reading means further includes data recognition means arranged to execute separation of the image data generated by said single scan to provide data indicative of the game character or the function related to the game character to each of said set of cards from the code patterns in the separated image data, and the game program executing means is arranged to cause the game program to perform a game based on the detected data by using the detected data as input data representing operation by the player.
