Abstract:

To reduce noise, such as a smear outputted from a solid-state image pickup element, without providing any special light quantity adjusting devices.

An imaging apparatus having an electron multiplication type image pickup device comprises the electron multiplication factor control means of the electron multiplication type image pickup device; an acquisition means for acquiring a signal outputted from a pixel in which light is shielded in the electron multiplication type image pickup device; an averaging means for averaging the signals acquired by the acquisition means between lines; a suppression means for performing prescribed low- and high-level suppression to the signal averaged by the averaging means according to the electron multiplication factor of the electron multiplication factor control means; an acquisition means for acquiring an image signal outputted from a pixel in which light is not shielded in the electron multiplication type image pickup device; and a subtraction means for subtracting the signal suppressed by the suppression means from the image signal acquired by the acquisition means.
