To provide a hydrogen generator which can properly handle the hydrogen generation reaction to a stop and regulate its speed and does not need a complicated apparatus for controlling the supply of water or the like, and a method for generating hydrogen.
The hydrogen generator for generating hydrogen by reacting a solid hydrogen generating agent 1 and a reactant liquid 2 is equipped with a container 10 having plurally partitioned storing spaces 11, a hydrogen generating agent 1 stored in each storing space 11 at a filling rate where an intrusion of the reactant liquid 2 into the storing spaces 11 becomes difficult by swelling of the hydrogen generating agent 1 at the time when the reaction is almost completed, and a channel 20 for supplying the reactant liquid which communicates with each storing space 11 but can supply the reactant liquid 2 to the other storing spaces 11 when the supply of the reactant liquid 2 to any of the storing spaces becomes difficult.
