To provide an electrolyte used for a direct methanol type fuel cell which can have coexistence of high proton conduction and methanol transmission suppression by controlling more in detail the spatial arrangement of an ion conduction portion and a methanol transmission suppressed portion in a film and which is of lower cost and superior in mechanical strength and thermal stability compared with the one of perfluoro-alkyl sulfonic acid system.
This is a proton conduction film which is a film composed of a polymer segment having an ion conduction component (A) and a polymer segment having no ion conduction component (B), and in which (i) A and B form mutually a continuous micro-phase separation structure in the film and (ii) the continuous phase made of B surrounds partially a domain made of A. This is a proton conduction film in which the domain made of segment (A) forming the micro-phase separation structure shows a circle, an ellipse, or a variation and a coalescence of these and its size is in the range 1-300 nm in the diameter average value, and the hydrophobic continuous phase made of B surrounding this partially shows a morphology having the average value of thickness of 1-50 nm.
