Abstract:

To provide an electrode electrolyte for polymer electrolyte fuel cells having improved proton conductivity and dimensional stability.

The electrode electrolyte for polymer electrolyte fuel cells contains a composition of polyarylene having a sulfonic acid group and a nitrogen- containing heterocyclic aromatic compound. The polyarylene having a sulfonic acid group includes repeating units expressed by the following general formula A, and those expressed by the following general formula B. In the formulae, Y indicates at least one type of structure selected from a group comprising -CO-, -SO2-, -SO-, -CONH-, -COO-, -(CF2)1- (1: an integer from 1 to 10), and -C(CF3)2-; Z indicates direct bonding, or at least one type of structure selected from a group comprising -(CH2)1- (1: an integer of 1 to 10), -C(CH3)2-, -O-, and -S-; and Ar indicates an aromatic series group having substituent expressed by -SO3H, -O(CH2)pSO3H, or -O(CF2)pSO3H, while p, m, n, and k indicate an integer of 1-12, 0-10, 0-10, and 1-4, respectively.
