An electronic dictionary 1 is provided with a main display 10, a sub-display 11 formed integrally with a touch panel 11a, a flash ROM 80 for storing a dictionary DB 84, an input part 30 for inputting a retrieving character string, and a CPU 20. The main display 10 displays a list of respective entries corresponding to retrieving character strings in the dictionary DB 84 on an entry list display area, reads out the explanation information of a specified entry in the entry list display area from the dictionary DB 84 and displays the read information in a preview area. The sub-display 11 displays a layout changing picture H of the main display 10. The CPU 20 changes the size of the preview area on the basis of user's touch operation on the layout changing picture H and redisplays the size-changed preview area.
