Abstract:
[Problem] To provide a switch system and a method which enable high-speed path switching without requiring mechanical drive. [Solution] An optical switch system comprising: a multicore fiber 3; a spatial optical modulation element 5 for collectively switching a beam bundle emitted from a plurality of cores of the multicore fiber 3 to any of a plurality of multicore fibers; and a control unit 7 for controlling the spatial optical modulation element 5. An optical switch method comprising: a step for making an adjustment using a collimator lens 11 and a condenser lens 13 such that optical beams emitted from a plurality of cores of a multicore fiber 3 enter a spatial optical modulation element 5; and a step for controlling a direction in which a plurality of optical beams that have entered the spatial optical modulation element 5 are emitted from the spatial optical modulation element 5 by collectively controlling the entire spatial optical modulation element 5.
