1335513 Testing cable insulation STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 18 May 1972 23434/72 Heading G1U In a cable insulation testing system, freshly extruded insulated cable 3, Fig.1, is passed through a water cooling bath 2 and over an electrode 1, Fig. 1, bent from a flat strip into a V-shape 5, 6, Fig.2. The electrode comprises a central brass or aluminium portion 9 sandwiched between two insulating layers 5, 6, part of the innermost layer 5 being cut away to expose the central conductor. In use the cable conductor is earthed and a voltage of the order of 7 volts is applied to the electrode via an extended portion 8 thereof. Any defects in the cable insulation then cause current surges which can be detected and used in a convenient manner.
