Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1449472 Compression moulding thermoplastic articles OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 7 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 56906/73 Heading B5A A method of moulding fibre reinforced thermoplastic articles comprises the steps of (a) heating a mass of thermoplastic polymer having fibres distributed therethrough to a temperature, above the melting point of the polymer, at which the viscosity of the mass is such that it will retain its shape unless subjected to a compressive force, (b) introducing the mass into a compression mould, (c) closing the compression mould on the mass at such a speed and with such a force that the mass flows and fills out the mould cavity before there is significant heat transfer to the mould, (d) maintaining the compressive force until the moulded mass is sufficiently cooled to be handleable, and (e) removing the compression moulding forces and removing the article from the mould. Preferably the heating takes place in a screw extruder in which the polymer and fibres are compounded. The heated mass is extruded and cut into billets which are then fed to the compression moulding apparatus which may be, for example, a mechanical stamping press. Polymers which may be used are polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, thermoplastic polyester, polyvinyl chloride. The fibrous reinforcement may be milled fibres, boron fibres, asbestos fibres or glass fibres, and a filler such as talc, calcium carbonate or silica may be used.
