Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS508401
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
1276005 Casting processes WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 28 March 1969 [1 April 1968] 16322/69 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions C7 F4 and H5] Degassing apparatus for removing impurities from molten metal in a vacuum chamber includes one or more non-consumable electrodes in the vacuum chamber and arc-controlling means outside the chamber. Each non-consumable electrode has a fluid-cooled arcing surface and contains a magnetic field coil for moving the arc. Particulate charge may be fed through an annular passageway 138, Fig. 6, between an electrode 129 and its jacket 137, or charge may be fed through a passageway 132 in the electrode 129 itself, or charge is fed via a conduit 146 around the wall of the mould 123, when the apparatus is used for producing an ingot 151 in a cooled mould as well as removing impurities. The mould 123 has a detachable base (not shown). A skull melting furnace 226, Fig. 7, may be disposed in a large vacuum chamber228 and a pouring ladle 231 is moved through a lock 240 as required. Charging is via a further lock 237. An ingot may be poured within the chamber 228. Any of the feeding mechanisms may include the use of an inert gas to transport a particulate charge to the arc site. Reference is made to casting steel, tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium, zirconium, titanium and alloys. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,154,491.
