Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5137232
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
1435425 Micro-suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride RHONE-PROGIL SA 5 June 1974 [8 June 1973] 24940/74 Heading C3P A method of homo- or co-polymerizing vinyl chloride in microsuspension which comprises polymerization of the monomer or monomers in micro-suspension in the presence of a seeding product in the form of particles of the vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer prepared by micro-suspension polymerization, which particles contain all of the organo-soluble initiator necessary for the polymerization, and in which the initiator is activated by the presence of an organo-soluble metallic complex produced in situ throughout the polymerization reaction system by reacting a water soluble metallic salt present in the polymerization system with a complexing agent that is capable of causing the metal to change from its water-soluble form to a form soluble in vinyl chloride, that has no inhibiting action on the polymerization or on the activation of the initiator, and that is progressively introduced throughout the course of the reaction. In a modification of the process the complex per se may be progressively introduced throughout the course of the reaction. The metal of the organo-soluble complex may be Fe, Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Zn, Ti, V, Mn, Cr, or Ag and the complexing agent may be a monocarboxylic acid, a polycarboxylic acid, an alkyl phosphoric acid, lactone, ketone, or carbazone capable of causing the metal to change from its watersoluble form to a form soluble in vinyl chloride and having no inhibiting action on the polymerization and on the activation of the initiator, e.g. sulphosalicylic acid, naphthenic acid, octanoic acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid, maleic anhydride, di(2-ethyl)hexylphosphoric acid, ascorbic acid, γ-butyrolactone, benzoin, ascorbic acid, acetylacetone, or diphenylthiocarbazone.
