Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5141089
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1484096 Graft polymerization process MONSANTO CO 4 Aug 1975 [5 Aug 1974] 32504/75 Heading C3G A polymer blend is produced by a process which comprises (a) dissolving a rubbery polymer, other than an ethylene-propylene-non- conjugated diene terpolymer, in a monomer formulation comprising at least one monovinylidene aromatic monomer; (b) bulk polymerizing the solution from (a), at a temperature of from 95‹ to 125‹ C. with agitation and in the presence of a peroxide catalyst with a half-life of less than one hour at 130‹ C. and often hours at a temperature from 95‹ to 115‹ C., to a partially polymerized mixture having a conversion of 10 to 45%; (c) suspending the partially polymerized mixture in an inert liquid; (d) suspension polymerizing the said mixture at a temperature of from 110‹ to 150‹ C. in the presence of a peroxide catalyst with a half-life of less than one hour at 130‹ C. and of ten hours at a temperature of from 95‹ to 130‹ C., the partially polymerized mixture having an essentially complete conversion to a polymer blend; and (e) recovering the polymer blend from the suspension. Examples are given in which polybutadiene is grafted with styrene using tert.-butyl perbenzoate as catalyst in stages (b) and (d), or tert.-butyl peracetate in stage (b) and tert.- butyl perbenzoate in stage (d). The graft polymers produced are blended with polystyrene.
