1527760 Stabilization of chromium dioxide BASF AG 17 Dec 1975 [18 Dec 1974 1 Sept 1975] 51568/75 Heading C1A Magnetic chromium dioxide particles are suspended in an aqueous and/or alcoholic medium containing the compound R n SI(OR1 ) 4-n or a hydrolysis product thereof (wherein R is organic of 1-18 C, R' is aliphatic either with 1-8 C in an uninterrupted chain or with 1-10 C in a chain interrupted by oxygen and n is 1, 2 or 3) and are subsequently isolated with a coating of an at least partial hydrolysis product of the silane and dried at 50-200‹ C. Silanes exemplified are isobutyl-, vinyl-, y-methacryloxypropyl, and y-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxy- and n-propyltrimethoxy-silanes. An acid or base may be added to ensure hydrolysis. The dried product may be heated at 70-200‹ C. before processing into magnetic recording media.
