Kind Code:

Abstract:
1,145,073. Pile fabrics. MONSANTO CO. 28 March, 1966 [9 April, 1965; 28 Dec., 1965], No. 13591/66. Heading D1K. A pile fabric simulating grass comprises a pile of thermoplastic monofilament ribbons 12 of at least 300 denier of rectangular crosssection, their width being at least three times their thickness. The pile may be formed by weaving together with the backing fabric on a Wilton cut-pile loom or it may be tufted into a woven or non-woven backing fabric. Alternatively, the pile and backing may be knitted on a warp knitting machine having a cutting attachment for the pile loops. As shown the pile 12 is embedded in a woven synthetic fibre backing 14 and anchored thereto by a bonding agent 16. A polyvinyl chloride foam layer 18 is then applied to the backing. The pile ribbons may be extruded from polyamides, polyesters or polypropylene, and are suitably pigmented. The backing material may be made from polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polypropylene or nylon or a nylon scrim coated with polyurethane foam may be used.
