Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5550976
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
1305886 Elastomer compositions MONSANTO CO 19 April 1971 [16 April 1970] 27098/71 Headings C3F C3P and C3Q Elastomer compositions comprise a vulcanizable elastomeric matrix having dispersed therein discontinuous unregenerated cellulose fibres having an aspect ratio of 20-350 (ratio of average length to average diameter) and a bonding agent capable of bonding the cellulose fibres to the elastomeric matrix. A variety of types of cellulose fibres may be used, and may be pretreated to reduce fibre to fibre interaction, e.g. by slurrying in water with carbon black or rubber latex. Bonding agents may also be applied to the fibres prior to incorporation in the elastomer matrix, e.g. a mixture of resorcinol/ formaldehyde and butadiene / styrene / vinyl pyridine latices. The fibres are preferably oriented in the rubber matrix, e.g. by milling or extrusion. The preferred bonding agents for use in the matrix are resorcinol-hexamethoxymethyl melamine and SiO 2 -resorcinol-hexamethylenetetramine, and may be formed in situ. Numerous elastomers are specified, those used in the examples being natural rubber, SBR, EPDM, Neoprene, nitrile rubber and certain mixtures thereof. Exemplified compositions also contain vulcanizing ingredients, and other additives selected from carbon black, extender oil, dioctyl phthalate, 2-mercapto imidazoline and N-(1,3- dimethylbutyl) - N1 - phenyl - p - phenylene diamine.
