NEW MATERIAL:A 3-chloro-4-cyanophenyl p-(trans-4-n-alkylcyclohexyl)benzoate of formulaI(R is 1W8C straight cahin alkyl).
USE: A liquid crystal compound, useful as a material for use in a liquid crystal display apparatus driven by a low voltage, exhibiting a large dielectric anisotropy (Δ), and having a high liquid crystal-liquid transition temperature (cl.p).
PROCESS: A p-(trans-4-n-alkylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile of formula II is converted into a (trans-4-n-alkylcyclohexyl)benzoic acid of formula III by the conventional method, and the resultant compound of formula III is reacted with SOCl2 to afford a p-(trans-4-n-alkylcyclohexyl)benzoyl chloride of formula IV, which is then esterified with 3-chloro-4-cyanophenol to afford the compound of formulaI.
