Abstract:
The printing heads act via impactors and colour tapes on the information carrier, advanced line by line round the paper support drum. To enable the heads to operate simultaneously and also provide for two way movement in the raster forming operation, the heads are arranged in sequence round the drum shaft (2) in a fixed block (5) for simultaneous printing. Their impactors (6) lie parallel to the shaft at a pitch ensuring that each prints one or several adjacent symbols on the carrier (3) which is stepped on round the shaft appropriate to this pitch. The block can be capable of pivoting away from the carrier and the heads are each individually pivotal. The two way movement of the carrier along the fixed shaft is via a mechanism in two parts (12,14) within the shaft. The parts are hinged to one another and connected to the carrier line advancer drive (19) and the horizontal raster drive (16), thus enabling the carrier to move in two mutually perpendicular directions. This reduces vibration, provides access to the heads and colour tape and at the same time retains compact easily managed dimensions.
