Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide an improved cutting tool, by specifying the atom ratios of the transition metal, C, N, O of a sintered hard alloy which is a carbide of WC and IVa, Va, VIa group transition metals and wherein the B-1 type hard phase is bound with ferrous elements and making said hard phase in the surface part of a member small. CONSTITUTION:A sintered hard alloy member has the molecular formula expressed generally by the formula I (M, M', M'' are >=1 kinds among IVa, Va, VIa group transition metals, A-C, u-w are atom ratios, (x) is the ratio of a nonmetallic constituting element to a metallic constituting element), contains W as a constituting element, and has the crystal structure consisting of the two phases; a solid soln. phase of B-1 type and a WC phase which are bound with 3-30wt% ferrous metal. This sintered hard alloy member has the relations of the formulas II-VII among A-C, u-w, x and has the B-1 type hard phase in the surface part less than said phase in the internal part. Such member is produced by sintering a green compact in a sintering atmosphere lower than the equil. value between the B-1 type solid soln. phase existing in said compact and the chemical potential of N and/or O in the stage of sintering the green compact by a powder metallurgical method.
