Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain titled foam in good balance between dimensional recovery and crosslinking rates, by blending a silyl-modified ethylene polymer with both foaming agent and hydroxy group-contg. surfactant to carry out a kneading under pressurized state followed by extrusion expansion and then by bringing the product into contact with water, etc. to effect crosslinking. CONSTITUTION:An polyethylene resin consisting virtually of a random or graft copolymer from (A) ethylene (and, if required, a comonomer) and (B) an unsaturated silane, pref. a compound of formula CH2=CHSi(OA)3 (A is 1-8C hydrocarbil) (e.g., vinyl trimethoxy silane) is incorporated with 0.5-5wt% based on the above resin of (1) a foaming agent plus (2) a hydroxyl group-contg. surfactant, e.g., a partial ester from polyhydric alcohol and 10-20C fatty acid followed by kneading under pressurized state and then extruding to a zone of lower pressure; the resulting expanded extrudate being brought into contact with water and a silanol catalyst (e.g., carboxylic acid salt) to promote crosslinking, thus obtaining the objective foam.
