To obtain the subject new compound having antibacterial activity which is specific to Helicobacter pylori and capable of expecting uses as a selective antibacterial agent.
This 1,6-di-substituted indane derivative is represented by formula I [R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl or lower alkyl; R2 is hydroxymethyl or carboxyl; (n) is an integer of 2-10], e.g. 6-benzyl-1-(3- carboxypropyl)indane. The compound of formula I in which R1 is phenyl is obtained by using terephthalaldehyde acid methyl as a starting material to synthesize 6-benzyl-1-[4-(t-butyldimethylsilyl-oxy)butyl]indane, deprotecting 4-(4- butyldimethylsilyloxy)butyl group therefrom, further oxidizing the deprotected compound. This antihelicobacter pylori agent can be obtained from the indane derivative.
