NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R1 is lower alkyl; R2 and R3 are 1W3C alkyl; R4 is H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or OH) and its salt.
EXAMPLE: 2-(4-Hydroxy-3,5-dimethylphenyl)-3-methylindole.
USE: A drug effective to suppress the allergic reaction such as asthma by specifically suppressing the lipoxygenase of polybasic unsaturated fatty acid and to suppress the production of fat peroxide, and useful for protecting the living tissue from the above peroxide. The above suppressing effect can be achieved even by oral administration.
PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting the compound of formula II or its salt with the compound of formula III (R5 is H or lower alkyl), cyclizing the resultant compound of formula IV to the com pound of formula V, and when R5 is lower alkyl, dealkylating the obtained compound of formula V.
