PURPOSE: To provide a new aniline derivative useful as an intermediate for azo dyes or couplers for color photographic photo-sensitive materials.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound, a 2-chloro-5-phenylsulfamoylaniline derivative of formula I (R1 is nonsubstituted alkyl; R2 is H or nonsubstituted alkyl; n is an integer of 0-2). This compound can be obtained by reaction between (A) 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride of formula II and (B) a compound of formula III (e.g. 2-chloro-5-n-hexadecylsulfamoylaniline) in an organic solvent in the presence of a base followed by reducing the resultant compound of formula IV. A compound of formula V (R is alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic group) esp. suitable as a coupler releasing a development inhibitor when reacted with an oxidized substance as the chief reagent for development, a DIR coupler to be used for the purpose of picture clearness and color reproducibility, can be obtained easily at a low cost using the compound of the formula I.
