To provide a means for industrially and advantageously producing a 4-halogeno-4'-hydroxybiphenyl in place of a conventional method.

A 4-tert-butoxy-4'-halogenobiphenyl compound is obtained by reacting a p-tert-butoxyphenylmagnesium halide with a p-dihalogenobenzene in the presence of a palldium metal compound catalyst or reacting a p- halogenophenylmagnesium halide with a p-tert-butoxyhalobenzene in the presence of the palladium metal compound catalyst. The resultant 4-tert-butoxy-4- halogenobiphenyl is then hydrolyzed under acidic conditions to industrially advantageously produce the 4-halogeno-4'-hydroxybiphenyl.
