PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain new 5-benzylhexanol-2 having flower-like fragrance, having excellent residual fragrance in a compound system applied on all kinds of fragrant products such as toiletries, household goods and personal care goods and having high safety.
SOLUTION: 5-Benzylhexanol-2 of formula I. The compound of formula I is produced by introducing a methylene group into 3phenylpropionaldehyde of formula III used as a raw material by a Mannich reaction to produce the compound of formula III, hydrogenating the product to lead to the compound of formula IV, further treating the hydrogenated product with acetone in an aldol reaction to obtain the compound of formula V and finally hydrogenating the reaction product. The compound of formula I can be used as a fragrance- imparting component singly or in combination with another component. A compounding ratio of the compound of formula I to a perfumery composition is preferably 0.1-90wt.%, especially about 0.5-70wt.%. The perfumery composition can be used in a wide range on a product requiring perfuming such as perfume, soap, shampoo, rinse, detergent, cosmetic, spray, or flavoring agent.
