Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a new composition for providing liquid crystal composition capable of responding at high speed in a wide temperature range by adding the compound as a chiral dopant to a liquid crystal showing a smectic phase because of low viscosity and excellent liquid crystal properties of the compound.
CONSTITUTION: This optically active compound is shown by formula I (R1 is a 1-18C alkyl or a 2-18C alkenyl; m is 0 or 1; rings A to C are 1,4-phenylene or pyridine-2,5-diyl; Y and Z are each a single bond or CH2CH2; W is F or OH; R2 is a 1-18C alkyl) such as (S)-2-[4-(5-fluoroundecyloxy)phenyl-5- decylpyrimidine. A compound wherein W is OH in the compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with propargyl bromide in the presence of a base, then making the reaction product into an anion by using a strong base, reacting the anion with an optically active oxirane of formula III to give a compound of formula IV and hydrogenating the compound by catalytic reduction.
