To provide an abnormal electric current detecting device and an abnormal electric current detecting method capable of accurately detecting a layer short circuit which occurs in various forms.
The abnormal electric current detecting device 20 for detecting an abnormal electric current flowing in an electric line 25 includes a semiconductor switch 22, a semiconductor switch drive circuit 24, an electric current detecting circuit 26 for detecting an electric current flowing in the electric line 25, and a control unit 30 for driving and controlling the semiconductor switch drive circuit 24. A CPU 32 of the control unit 30 performs a layer short circuit detection process according to a program stored in a memory 33, and determines whether the abnormal electric current flowing in the electric line 25 due to the occurrence of the layer short circuit based on an amount of change in the electric current per predetermined period of time (di/dt).
