Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-performance abrasive material based on α-Al2O3 and ZrO2 containing a specified or larger amount of a tetrahedral crystal form and containing Ti compounds in the form of suboxides, carbides and/or oxycarbides.
CONSTITUTION: An α-Al2O3 source such as bauxite and a ZrO2 source such as baddeleyite are mixed with each other to form an α-Al2O3-ZrO2 eutectic mixture containing about 35 to 50 wt.% ZrO2. Next, the eutectic mixture is mixed with about 0.5 to 10 wt.% (in terms of TiO2) one or more Ti compounds (such as rutile, ilmenite, or the like selected among suboxides, carbide, and oxycarbides and a suitable amount of a reducing agent such as coke. The resultant mixture is melted by heating in an electric furnace, and the molten mixture is rapidly cooled to 600°C or below and solidified within about 10 sec to obtain a high-performance abrasive material based on ZrO2 at least 80% of which is present in the form of a tetrahedral crystal and α-Al2O3 and containing a small amount of a Ti compound.
