PURPOSE: To continuously measure the activity of activated sludge, by measuring carbon dioxide generating velocity per the quantity of unit sludge by mounting a carbon dioxide concentration measuring instrument and a sludge concentration measuring instrument to an agitating mixing tank of synthetic sewage, whose substrate and organic matter concentration are fixed, and precipitated sludge.
CONSTITUTION: Synthetic sewage produced by mixing glucose, peptone and monopotassium phosphate in equal weight and by diluting the mixture with city water is sent to an agitating tank 20 in a fixed quantity per unit time by means of a fixed- quanity pump 15 from a storage tank 14 while sludge from a sedimentation basin is fed to the agitating tank 20 in a fixed quantity by means of a fixed-quantity pump 22 from a storage tank 23, and a fixed quantity of air is blown in from an air dispersing pipe 16. The synthetic sewage and sludge injected into the agitating tank 20 are sufficiently mixed by means of an agitator 21, carbon oxide generated is collected by means of a collector 18 and the concentration of carbon dioxide is measured by means of an ultraviolet ray spectrophotometer 19. Meanwhile, the concentration of activated sluded in the agitating tank 20 is measured by means of a sludge densitometer 24, the both measuring value is given to a computing circuit 25 and the activity of the sludge is measured.
