PURPOSE: To obtain an Al alloy excellent in specific elasticity, specific strength, thermal resistance, wear resistance, etc., and used as matrix of an Al alloy composite material having SiC fiber, etc., as reinforcement, by providing a composition consisting of specific percentage of Cu and the balance Al with inevitable impurities.
CONSTITUTION: The above-mentioned Al-Cu binary alloy consists of, by weight, 3W7%, preferably 4%, Cu and the balance Al with inevitable impurities. The above inevitable impurities are Si, Fe, Mn, Cr, etc., and it is desirable that their content is limited so that each content is <0.5% and their total is <1.0%. Moreover, on addition of Ti and B to the Al alloy, grains are refined and mechanical properties are improved. On compounding this Al alloy as matrix together with SiC fiber or SiC whiskers, for example, by a liquid metal forging method, Al alloy composite material excellent in mechanical properties can be obtained.
