To provide an alkaline secondary battery with a long life in which sufficient migration suppression effect is obtained without accompanying deterioration of charging performance and generation of hydrogen even if an yttrium compound is added.
The alkaline secondary battery has a cadmium negative electrode 11 filled with a cadmium active material, a positive electrode 12 filled with a nickel active material, a separator 13 separating these, and an alkaline electrolytic solution in an outer package can 15. The cadmium negative electrode 11 has a mixed layer of yttrium compound and fluororesin formed on the surface. Since this kind of mixed layer is formed on the surface of the cadmium negative electrode, deterioration of charging performance and generation of hydrogen accompanying it are prevented, and migration of the cadmium negative electrode is suppressed, thereby obtaining the alkaline battery of a long life.
