To obtain a copolymer which yields a heat-resistant resin through dealcoholization reaction at a low heating temperature by polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising an α-hydroxymethylacrylate and a polymerizable quaternary ammonium salt.
A monomer mixture comprising an α-hydroxymethylacrylate of formula I and a polymerizable quaternary ammonium salt of formula II is polymerized. In the formulae, R1 is 1-18C alkyl; R2 is H or CH3; R3 is 1-20C alkyl; X- is a monovalent anion, preferably Cl-, Br-, methanesulfonyloxy ion, benzenesulfonyloxy ion and p-toluenesulfonyloxy ion. In addition to these monomers, polymerizable monomers may be added. The preferable mole ratio of the α-hydroxymethylacrylate: the polymerizable quaternary ammonium salt: the other monomers is (30-99.9):(0.01-50):(0-65). The temperature at which a heat resistant resin is obtained from the copolymer is preferably 130-250°C under normal pressure.
