To provide an apparatus and a method for electrodeposition coating an automobile body, which can adequately control the coating thickness according to the position, without excessively forming a coating on the easily film-formed position.

The apparatus for electrodeposition coating the automobile body are characterized by having at least; an electrodeposition tank 2 for accommodating an electrodeposition coating 1; a transferring means 4 which enters the automobile body 3 from one end of a longitudinal direction of the electrodeposition tank 2, makes it ravel longitudinally in the electrodeposition tank 2, takes it out from the other end of the longitudinal direction of the electrodeposition tank 2, and carries out this process sequentially and continuously; and an electrification means which applies direct current between both electrodes, so as to make the automobile body put into the electrodeposition tank 2 and immersed into the electrodeposition coating 1 as one electrode, and electrode members 17a to 17h arranged at a distance from the automobile body 3 in the electrodeposition tank 2 as the other electrode, and electrodeposits the electrodeposition coating 1 on the surface of the automobile body 3. A total length of the electrode members 17a-17h in a longitudinal direction of the electrodeposition tank 2, varies depending on a position of a depth direction and/or a width direction in the electrodeposition tank 2.
