To provide an apparatus and a method for evaluating hologram recording mediums and correctly grasping the multiple recording performance of hologram recording mediums.

The apparatus for evaluating hologram recording mediums is provided with: an information laser beam irradiation means for irradiation with an information laser beam containing signals corresponding to data to be recorded to a hologram recording medium when data are to be recorded in the hologram recording medium; a recording reference laser beam irradiation means for irradiation with a reference laser beam for recording to the hologram recording medium at an angle different from that of the information laser beam when data is to be recorded in the hologram recording medium; a diffraction efficiency measuring means for measuring the diffraction efficiency of a recording region of the hologram recording medium when data are to be recorded in the hologram recording medium; and a multiple recording limit measuring means for keeping on performing multiple recordings on the hologram recording medium until reaching a prescribed diffraction efficiency and measuring the limit number of times by which multiple recordings can be performed as a property for evaluation.
