Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide an aromatic compound useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and liquid crystals and especially an intermediate for a liquid crystal compound having excellent refractive index anisotropy and low viscosity.
CONSTITUTION: This aromatic compound is expressed by formula I (X1 to X4 are each CH, CF or N; R is a 1-12C alkyl, a 2-12C alkenyl or an alkynyl), e.g. 4-(1-trans-pentenyl)phenylacetylene. The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting an acetylene compound of formula II with a basic substance (e.g. NaOH) in a solvent (e.g. toluene) at -20 to +150°C. The amount of the basic substance is 1-5 equivalent based on 1 equivalent of the compound of formula II. The compound of formula II can be produced by reacting an ethynyl derivative of formula III (D is a halogen or OSO2R'; R' is a lower alkyl or phenyl) with a boron compound in the presence of a metal catalyst.
