PURPOSE: To obtain an artificial stone which allows the viewing of patterns through the stone from the front surface down to a deep part or to the rear surface and the bright viewing of pattern materials by bonding a light transparent base material and the pattern materials having the refractive index higher than the refractive index of this material by a resin.

CONSTITUTION: This artificial stone is formed by bonding the light transparent base material and the pattern materials having the refractive index higher than the refractive index of the base material by the resin. The base materials to be used are exemplified by aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, silica, alumina, etc. The materials which are higher in refractive index than the base material and have the properties to allow the transmission of light or reflect the light are used as the pattern materials. For example, glass beads, soda glass beads, etc., are used, among which the borosilicate glass beads in particular are preferable as these beads have the high refractive index. The resin which has the refractive index equal to the refractive index of the base material or the refractive index smaller than the refractive index of the pattern materials is more preferable. For example, acrylic resins, polyester resins, epoxy resins, etc., are used.
