PURPOSE: To perform exact adjustment of dimensions of a rod guide by clamping a first cylinder member of the rod guide until a second cylinder member is relatively displaced with respect to the first cylinder member, thereafter loosening clamping of the first cylinder member up to the position at which the relative displacement started, to complete the adjustment of dimensions of the rode guide.
CONSTITUTION: For a steering ratio variable means 11, in order to perform determination of dimensions of the rod guide 35 of an output rod member 16 whose stroke is displaced in the direction of car-width in response to front wheel steering angle, an output rod 36 is first clamped to a clamping jig 72. When a first cylinder member 35A at the lower side is clamped and it is confirmed by a displacement gage 73 that the displacement of a second cylinder member 35B begins, the first cylinder member 35A is returned in the direction of loosening itself so that the second cylinder member 35B returns to the position at which its displacement began, and thereby the so-called back lash between the rod guide 35 and the output rod 36 is eliminated. Then, the dimensions of both the cylinder members 35A, 35B are determined using locknuts 35C, and both the cylinder members 35A, 35B are fixed to set the rod guide 35 at a specified length.
