To provide a backup power supply that supplies stable power while achieving cost-saving and space-saving, and its control method.
The backup power supply is composed of component elements such as a commutator 2 for converting AC power inputted from a commercial power supply 1 into DC power, a charger 3 for charging a battery pack 4, and a discharger 5 for converting power outputted by the battery pack 4 so as to output it to a load 6. A minimum allowable discharge voltage of the battery pack 4 is matched with an allowable minimum voltage of the load 6. The discharger 5 is composed of only a step-down circuit. A switching element of the step-down circuit is not only put into step-down operation by switching but also into direct-connection operation and is opened when discharge from the battery pack 4 is stopped.
