The belt type continuously variable transmission having a starting friction element comprises a torsional damper 2, an oil pump 17, a primary pulley 13 and the starting friction element 7 arranged on a transmission input shaft 1 as the first shaft in sequence from the engine side, the primary pulley 13 having a movable sheave 13b and a driving piston 13c arranged on the engine side, and an output gear 9 and a secondary pulley 15 arranged on a secondary pulley shaft 14 as the second shaft in sequence from the engine side, the secondary pulley 15 having a movable sheave 15b and a driving piston 15c arranged on the opposite side to the engine. The secondary pulley 15 an the output gear 9 are arranged adjacent to each other in the axial direction.
