EXAMPLE: 3'5'-Di-tert-butyl-4'-hydroxy-4-benzylidenetetrahydro-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl- furan-3-one.
USE: A pharmaceutical. An anti-oxidizing agent or a wide-band sunscreen absorbing light of a wave length ranging from 280 to 380 nm. The compound is employed in a cosmetic used daily or for avoiding sunburn and for the treatment of skin inflammation and allergy, and a certain kind of cancer.
PREPARATION: For example, an aromatic aldehyde of formula II is condensed with a cyclanone of formula III in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate in a solvent to give a compound of formula I.
