Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the, subject highly safe medicine containing a specific bile alcohol sulfate, having the promotive activity to discharge cholesterol out of the body without impairing its lipid digestive absorption-facilitating activity.
CONSTITUTION: This medicine contains a bile alcohol sulfate of the formula (R1, R2 and R3 each is H, OH or CH3; (n) is 0-3) or a salt thereof, e.g. 5β- petromyzonol sulfate. The illustrated compound can be obtained, for example, by the following processes: cholic acid is acetylated into triacetyl cholic acid, which is then dehydrated into triacetyl cholic acid anhydride, which is, in turn, reduced into triacetyl cholanol, which is then converted into its sulfuric ester followed by alkaline hydrolysis thereof to eliminate the three acetyl groups. It is preferable that the formulation of this medicine be tablets or capsules, and the dose of this medicine is 300-600mg a day in terms of the compound of the formula.
